Like grains of sand rippled along a deserted beach each tiny piece will be pushed to a place of isolation untill the winds of time change its course and bring it back to its beginnings, is this unlike mans journey?

I don't believe that the two concepts you use here are diametrically opposed.
> No (wo)man is an island. True, if we accept that every thought, every deed of any individual affects the whole of humankind - similar to the butterfly effect. It's like being but one intersection in a vast, unending cosmic net or web of humanity. Pluck one string and the whole quivers. But, given this definition, a (wo)man can be physically alone and still not be an island.
> How long can a (wo)man stand alone? To me this question implies a moral stand not a reference to relationship status or actual hermit-aloneness. If one's ability to stand on principle is of utmost importance, and one's moral fiber is unshakeable, I imagine that one can stand alone for an entire lifetime, if need be. The concept that no (wo)man is an island would not change that.

The idea of ' island ' is total independence.. well, interdependence with air, water, even the ground to stand on, if taken away, man may not last even a fraction of a second!

It depends on what he stands for.If he stands alone to prove a point or to be an individual than he can stand as long as he can sustain the silence. If he stands to make a statement than he must believe and have faith in himself and his belief's.

Only you decide that.
I personaly know men who were alone for 5 years (and when say alone i don't only say without girlfriend, but i also say lack of any relationship that lead to sex) and i also met men that walked their girlfriend home, ****** her and after that went directly to another woman's bed.
So you decide what you like most. NO rain at all or mud - not being able to get out of it.
