Depends on who made it. most are OK for at least 100,000 miles.
Some older Ford 5 speeds benefit from better quality fully synthetic oil (NOT normal transmission oil, it stops changing gear when hot if you do that), Ford specify a synthetic of their own to make them work but there are better/cheaper versions. I found the older 5spd. GETRAG trans. in OPEL likes full synthetic even though it isnt required. If its working OK dont mess with it, if its 'sticking' when hot you may benefit from oil change. If its grinding, time for replacement or rebuild
