Make sure you say NOTHING bad about the boss around them. This person will usually pretend to be cool with you, but the second you are late, or say something negative, he/she is writing it down and reporting it right to the boss. The boss see's this person as their right hand, go to guy. I'd play the game though. Pretend to be friendly with that person, and say all sorts of nice things about your boss and how you love the company. Kiss up's will eat it up! But in reality, you are winning this game!

I can answer that from another perspective. I am the managing RN for a small hospice group in Hattiesburg,MS. I have an administrative assistant, a marketing person and a social worker who are all very passive-aggressive personalities. Alone they are not a problem, together they are a pain in the neck. When one of them approaches me with a "concern" I listen to her. I then check it out. If it is a legitimate concern I deal with it. I have pretty much stop the "kissing" up thing by saying to them "I am so glad you brought that to my attention(if it's gossip)" Stay right here for a minute, then I go get the other person(the one the allegation is being made about) and say let's discuss this problem the two of you are having. It has really cut down on a whole lot of that sort of thing. The complaint's now tend to be genuine. If your boss is someone who you can talk to about the problem go and tell him/her. If not my advise is to stay away from that co-worker and when he/she is around just don't talk or continue any conversation until he/she walks away. Being forced into being an outsider is a very uncomfortable place to be, if you do this the "brown noser" may quit doing what he/she is doing.
Good luck.

This is the cretin who usually has more dirt under his/her fingernails than anyone else. He/she rats everyone else out so because he/she believes it will keep his stench beneath the boss' radar. Boss likes having a rat, though, for obvious reasons. What you need to do is find out the rat's dirt, what his secret is, and exploit it. Place him in Coventry amongst the rest of you workers. Have someone call HR to inquire the about your rat's length of time on the job, pay-rate, etc, as if he's looking for another job. Glue his desk drawers shut; plug his computer into a clapper...this is fun. but annoying. But whatever you do, do it subtly and do it well! Make you rat a whimpering chaser of his own shadow. He'll leave...or get fired.

Never lie to this person. If there is a situation that becomes "out of hand" and you're involved, approach your boss first. Hi, Mr. Smith, there's a situation that's developed and we need to discuss it. Then be honest. You may not realize it, but most bosses know about kiss ups. They use them to keep track of things and how honest the rest of you are being in bizarre situations. If you give this person enough rope, they will hang themselves. Do your job, and quit worrying abou t other people and what they do. It makes you the same person. Don'tcha Know?

Two MAJOR tactics:
1. Whenever you WANT the boss to know something, tell this person. He/She will pass it on.
2. Once the kiss-up has become used to you feeding him/her with true titbits of information, tell him something false. Ask him not to tell this to ANYONE, and then simply deny you said it. e.g. If the BOSS saw you working on Monday @ 08:00, but kiss up does not know this' tell kiss-up 'confidentially' that on Monday @ 08:00 you went for a quick breakfast and no one saw you.

simple...as an employer myself, ive been through that situation. just do your job as you should, keep your personal life at home, only talk about work related subjects and let the kissup hang itself...most of em do when they find out that the tactics they have been using against fellow employees no longer works, and if the boss is using the kiss up as a spy, there will be not much you can do, but the job you agreed to do for the pay you accepted to do it for.

Don't be such a baby.
Tattle tales are nasty, but whiners aggravate everyone.
Give the kid something good to tell instead of fuel for degradation.
Seriously. I have several people who work under me, and I am very aware of what is tattle and what is fact. I know the solid workers from the lazy ones.
The ones I have my real eye on though are the complainers.
They bring everyone down.

You have to make her genuinely fear you. Somehow you have to let a rat know that you will probably break their F'n arm if they F with U and they have to believe it. Some might think I'm being harsh but think about it; this person is trying to put you and your family in the street by getting you fired. Now I don't know about you but It's a whole new ballgame when someone F's with my family.

Keep to yourself, do your job and give the office kiss-up nothing to go to your boss with. We've all had to learn this the hard way. Eventually 'kiss-up' will get whats coming.
