I heard that sky encode their movies using their own format so copying them onto an external device (if you can) would be useless if you did not have the decoder..... which by the way is built into HARDWARE in the Sky+ box
just a thought
UPDATE!!!
in response to bostonianinmo's answer below.... i think that sky also use Macrovision to encrypt output of thier movie stream to any of the output ports of the sky box.... so i dont think that would work

Would depend wether you've got a tv card in your pc
then you would need to take a lead ,from the out put of your sky box decoder, to you pc
Ive got to go look at cables now,and see if i can play it thro
windows media centre, and record at the same time, or put it straight to virtual memory

Assuming that the Sky box has video and audio outputs, and you have a video capture card and software on your computer, yes you should be able to transfer them.

When you get up the personal planner of all the programmes you have recorded can't you just press the 'keep' button? Not sure if you have to watch it first. I've wondered when programmes are 'kept' so maybe it's the hard drive and the answer to your question?
