another edit: so, since I do live here, I am mostly looking for unique free/fun things. things like sixth st/alamo/etc aren't so interesting to me, I'm mostly looking for non-touristy off the beaten path type things

San Antonio--The Riverwalk or the Alamo
Austin-Sixth Street
Plano--I believe there is a soccer stadium there. You can watch soccer. It is either in Plano or Frisco. There are tons of nice restaurants and stuff in Plano but I don't think there is anything special or unique about it.

La Tuna is great anytime. Bands every weekend until 11 pm. They are in a neighborhood so everything goes quiet after 11. san antonio is a big town. Millions of people that act like they are in a small town.

The witte museum and the contemporary art museum are free on Tuesdays after 3 pm.

The McNay art museum is very reasonable.

blue star arts is very abstract art and lots of fun on first fridays of the month where all of the area (King Williams) has one big party. Down the street from LA TUNA. Again...closed at 11 pm.

Then, go to the Mexican Market and have dinner at the 24 hour restaurant. This is a little expensive, but a must a least once.

Go bike in Brackenridge or McAlister Park. Go to the Zoo and the Japanese tea Gardens and if you come in April do Fiesta. San ANtonio closes for a whole day. Banks, government offices and many other businesses as well as all the schools. We do this to go to the battle of flowers parade. in memory of the alamo we no longer battle bullets but roses.

have fun. Viva la San Antonio.

Austin: Go for a walk or a bike ride on the Hike and Bike Trail around Town Lake. (It's a really pretty trail. Everyone in Austin seems to be down there all the time, walking around the lake with their dog.) Go swimming at Barton Springs. Drive out to the Hill Country and go inner-tubing in the creek. Check out the Austin Chronicle to see if there are any interesting free or cheap events going on. (The Austin Chronicle is online, I think it's just www.austinchronicle.com). See what offbeat, interesting, arty, campy or whatever movies might be playing at the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown. Go check out the new Blanton Museum of Art on the UT Campus - it's on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. - admission is cheap -- they stay open late on either Thursday or Friday evening and have music and events -- so that could be a cool thing. If you're in Austin on Saturday morning, go down to the farmer's market at 4th and Guadalupe and buy a delicious Oaxacan tamale, which is wrapped in a banana leaf, from Leonor the Tamalady, who will be instantly recognizable because she's the one with the vase of paper flowers balanced on her head. You can buy delicious fruits, vegetables, locally made cheese, Middle Eastern food, bread, pastries, etc. at the farmer's market, too. ...Outside of town, drive out to the area near Fredericksburg and hike up Enchanted Rock; then go eat lunch in Fredericksburg because you'll be hungry by then.....

San Antonio: There's a place called La Tuna Icehouse that was having free classic movies under the stars this summer. Probably not doing that now that it's almost November, but worth checking out their website just to see if there's anything going on. I don't know what the website is but just google "la tuna" and "san antonio" and maybe "icehouse" and something should come up. ... Also I read this summer that they're making a walking trail out by the missions. Part of the trail is completed and is open. That would be really pretty and I've been wanting to check it out. ...Also have you been out to the missions? Not the Alamo, but like Mission San Jose and the other 3 that are more on the outskirts of town. They are really cool. Some or all have these 400-year-old churches that are still in use. They have these great Roman-style Spanish aqueducts that still carry water. There aren't a lot of visitors and it's quiet and it's pretty.

Come to the Institute of Texas Cultures. It's a museum run by the University of Texas@San Antonio. They have several artifacts of all the different people who have come to live in the area we now refer to as Texas for the last 50,000 years. Go see the murals depicting the history of Texas at the Downtown Post Office across the street from the Alamo. Take a ride on the different street trolleys.(It's about $.75) Also take a visit to the Scottish Rite Temple. It's a library open to the public across the street from the Express and News newspaper.(And no,this is not the building where they filmed Ghostbusters on the rooftop)It just looks like it. and just in case no one said anything,"WELCOME TO SAN ANTONIO!!!"

I go to San Antonio almost every month i always go to the malls, downtown on Saturdays in a plaza called the Mercado "market" they have live music and awesome food vendors. I love this drive in theater down Roosevelt and military drive about 5-10 mins from downtown. There is Fiesta Texas, Sea World, Wonder World, The Caverns, Snake Farm, go inner tubing in San Marcos and you can also travel to San Marcos like maybe a 20 min drive to the outlets ( a outside mall with a lot of designer stores)
