the hand-held one and the one programmed into the suburban do not open the door anymore...however, the 'doorbell' switch still works. trying the reprogramming technique on the motor is ineffective. Any suggestions, please!

Try putting new batteries in the remotes. Does the hard-wired control work? Also, are you you sure you are programming the motor correctly for the remote. In the manual, it normally should tell you about a flash sequence on a bulb on the motor. It took me several attempts to get the motor on my garage door programmed properly. Also, I'd recommend checking the sensors at the bottom of the garage door to make sure that they are working properly and can detect when you pass your hand in front of them blocking the light. The bulbs on the sensor should change color from green to red or something like that when you pass your hand in front of them. If a wire came loose or if something is blocking the line of sight of the sensors then the door won't open. Check all around to make sure that there aren't any loose wires and to make sure the motor is plugged in all the way. Also make sure that someone hasn't flipped the lock switch on your hardwire control. If it is flipped to lock, the garage door won't open for the remotes. And yes, like someone mentioned, if you bought a new remote make sure the dip switch is set the same. It's a little blue switchpiece with about 4 small white switches on it. If the switches aren't set the same on the remote and the motor it won't work.

Good luck!

I've been doing garage doors and operators since '89. If your suburban and handheld trans does not work and the push button inside the garage does. usually it means there is a problem with your receiver board. could have been either a power surge or lightning strike close by to burn out the receiver board. older openers had an independant receiver box, others had a board built in to the opener. what type of opener do you have? how old is the opener? most openers that have safety beams there are replacement parts available!! sounds like a job for a certified garage door service man. service call $65-$75 + parts receiver boards $50 to $88. someone in the business will easily be able to tell what the problem is. never work on your operator with it plugged in. If you choose to look at it, unplug your opener. take cover off and look for burn marks in the sequencing boards.

Godd luck

the microwaves might have messed it up. If you look on the back of the unit itself there should be a code reset and you hold your remote while it reprograms if you dont know see what brand like sears go there ;ask where the remotes are and read the info on the back of the box(if you no longer have owners manuel). Your suburban owners guide should say something about this ,
You might have to use an original and not the suburban if there is a infr-red conflict. Or call The dealership and hit them up.

CHECK THE BATTERY! THIS IS THE LAST THING MOST PEOPLE CHECK. IF THE BATTERY IS GOOD, CHECK THE DIP SWITCHES ON YOUR HAND-HELD UNIT. IT HAS TO MATCH THE SWITCHES ON YOUR OPENER UNIT, GOOD LUCK.
