Age limits are there for a reason, albeit no one seems to follow them...
GTA is a good example, when the original came out nearly 10 years ago (gosh!) there was a huge uproar that it was going to turn all of us who played it into car stealing murderous thugs...
I suppose that age limits are there to absolve the company of any blame if some idiots decide to act on it.
A mature 14 year old is more than capable of playing and/or watching violently themed things... i suppose its also a matter of the context, is it appropriate that someone below a certain age be allowed to play a game where the main themes are murder, theft and sex... probably not...
In short, dont blame the game makers, blame the adults who buy the games for underage users who are too messed up to realise that it IS just a game.

Technically, yes, it's against the law for you to buy these games at 14 years old. It's the same thing as you going to the cinema to watch an R rated movie, and being turned away.
As with any law, though.. you have loopholes. The most obvious one is to know who you're buying your games from. Years ago, I worked at a video store, and being young and 'cool with the underage crowd', I didn't care what they were renting. I'd give the "X-rated room key" to whoever asked for it, regardless of age. (ahh, being young and dumb. Gotta love it.)
I know it sounds dumb to make a law of it.. It's basically the same thing with setting a legal age on tabacco & liquor. They KNOW these kids are going to get a hold of it.. It's just the government's way of making it harder to get to it, and ultimately pissing America's youth off.

Most kids are the same as you. They all seem to play games above their age group but what's the harm in that considering there is a lot worse stuff on TV before the 9 o'clock watershed nowadays.

Actually when I was 13 or 14 I would go out and buy restricted pc and video games at Gamestop and a few other stores and they never once checked for ID. They usually do for movies, but they never did for games. It never really did matter anyways because my parents would have bought them anyways, but it was always just shocking to see that no one would ever card me and I could just get them.

Same works for liquor. If you are not old enough to buy it, you will not get it, unless you ask somebody else to do that.. and that person is doing a 'crime'.
For games, rating are for parents really. If you father thinks you are mature enought to play those games, or that he thinks he is sure that it will not affect your mind and thought, he is taking responsibility.

I don't really care. The law says that video games are exempted form rating classification. The only reason why shops will not sell them to you is because they don't wanta get sued, no other reason.

You dad will be in a heap of trouble. Not to mention the vendors. So some people do care on the age limit.

So the bureaucratic liberals can say we passed laws to keep kids away from violent games.
