Would have thought you would be better off spending your money on food/etc than flying round the world.

Airline are not charitable. If they don't make a profit for the stock holders, they are going out of business. At a minimum the business requires a guaranteed pay load of cargo/passengers, a safe, well maintained landing strip, mechanics, ticket agents, baggage/cargo handlers, air traffic controllers, refueling capability, hangers, and other support. Even in the US flying between small airports is more expensive than flying between large cities. Supply and demand truly drive the airline business.

As far as I know, airlines offer cheaper ticket-prices according to the amount of traffic they think they can attract (what the market will bear...) They are not in business to help out under-developed countries, just to make money. If enough of your compratriots wish to travel often, these flight-prices will become competitive.

Sometimes depending on who has the monopoly of a particular country, there are reasonably priced air fares & shortly I believe things will get better the way prices are coming down.

sheesh, prices between states in the US are "throat cutting" to me. lets lower the prices here, before we worry about other countries...
