when i turn the computer on, windows will not start up. it goes to a screen asking me whether i was to start in normal mode, safe mode, etc. when i pick one, it shows the windows logo for a second, then i get a screen with a blue box that says some mode on, then it goes back to the screen asking me to choose normal or safe mode, and then does the same thing again? any ideas? thanks

If you cannot get to safe mode. Place your installation cd into the drive, when you start the machine, tell it to boot to the cd rom. (This setting is in the bios, you will need to hit the F1 or delete or F2 depending on your machine to get to the bios settings). I will assume this is XP or 2000 Professional. Once you get it to boot to the cdrom and the setup starts, tell it to repair the existing installation.

If you can get to safe mode and it's an XP machine, use the system restore to restore it to the last time you remember it working. Good Luck
