Christopher Columbus didn't need directions and neither do I! Men are better.

It has been proven that the cognitive skills required of map reading (transfering pictures into action and understanding of relative space) and direction finding are a right side brain function which is more predominant in men than women, reversing a car into a space is a another prime example.

There are always exceptions to the rule though as I am sure will be prven by follow up responses.

In my case I would have to say my boyfriend is better I have absolutely no sense of direction even if I have been somewhere a few times before I still cannot find my way, it does annoy me that I am so rubbish. We can be anywhere and if I ask him which way is north he will know how does he know!?! do men have an in-built compass?

I know people who could get lost in this question but to keep it simple I would have to say it depends on who you ask! Male or female!!! My personal opinion is women are definitely safer drivers but men can handle themselves much better in tight situations from my observations. Again, this is only my own personal opinion and not to be misconstrued as that of others!
PS: as for "davemc746" comment--- Christopher Columbus didn't land at his intended destination either!

Niether/both. If can see shadows and know which direction you want the sun gives you some idea if your going NSEW. If you then know how to read a map, no problems.
You did ask about navigation, not knowing you way around locally.

I think us women are better, but at the same time men can be better at some things too. When it comes to directions i am afraid us women take the prize for it this time. Don't you think girls?

Men have better sense of localization. But women differentiate better forms and colors.

I would say men, between my partner and I, I definitely can navigate with ease, but then she is the better driver.....perfect combo!

Whatever the driving skillset of women, navigation is not included.
