That's a difficult question to answer for a couple of reasons.
#1 Songs vary in length. We can assume that the average song is 3-3.5minutes in length.
#2 There are different types of compressions (WMA, MP3...etc) and generally within those compressions different qualities (128 bit, 160 bit, variable bit rate...etc). Type and quality influence the size of the compression and how it sounds. Generally the lower bit rate compression, loses sound quality. 128 bit compression is generally considered CD quality and I'll pick MP3 as a format type.
How many 3-3.5minute long songs ripped into MP3s at 128-bit compression will 256mb hold? 45-60 songs or so.

I have a 256 MP3 player so I know.
Realistically about 50. Depends on quality of the file. Most down loads are 128 and about 4 Mb per song. But some songs are longer and some qualities are higher.Unless your gonna go through all you songs and re-save them at 96.(which doesn't sound too good) you'll get about 50 songs.

I have a 256 MB USB "stick" and it fits a little more than a CD's worth so about 20 or so songs I guess. Of course it really depends on the average size of your songs though.

It depends on the length of the songs. You might be able to get about three and a half standard pop songs on this amount of memory
