It is better to install them in pairs, but I have seen VERY VERY few that will not work with different sizes. Just make sure you put the bigger one in slot 1. Also, don't worry about SIMM and DIMM, unless you have a computer from the mid-90s, you have DIMM.

It depends If your Mobo supports SIMM or DIMM ..!

Singe inline memory module ( SIMM )
Dual inline memory modeule ( DIMM )

Most of the mobo that supports DIMM also have an option to run with one card only thing is that you have to specifically insert it in the slot specified in the user guide ( generally the DIMM 2 slot in ASUS mobo's )

That depends on who and how your mobo was manufactured! Some systems can run different sized chips and some cant! Find your mobo manufacturer and read up on your specific board and its memory options.
