Our first two parties were the Federalists and the Democratic Republicans. During the war of 1812 the Federalist party was diminished and was followed by the Whigs. They too met their demise after the presidency of Millard Fillmore, which left America with a single party, the Democratic Republicans. It wasn't long after that differences arose within this party, and it split into the Democrats and the Republicans. The Democrats were originally the main party of the south, holding a consistant southern voting bloc for nearly a century, while the Republicans controlled the west and north. It wasn't until the civil rights movement that the parties developed into what we know them as today. The Democrats adopted the civil rights cause, the Southern States abandoned the Democratic party and turned mostly Republican. This led to the modern notion that the Democrats are more liberal, or more left, than the more conservative Republicans. In the 1980's the Republicans were taken over by Christian organizations, namely the Moral Majority and the Christian Right, while the Democrats suffered major losses until the presidency of Bill Clinton. His presidency was plauged by the loss of Congress to the Republicans in 1994, which caused many problems in getting legislation passed that he would approve of. The Congress has been controlled by the Republicans since 1994, and many are wondering if they will lose it next month, after 12 years of being in control....whew! Now my fingers hurt from typing so much, but hopefully I explained it well enough
