If you are a hockey fan, then you will realize that the penalties that the officials are calling are in some cases extreme. I feel they really determine the outcome of the game.

Do you think to many penelties are being called?

Do you think that the penelties are determing the game?

I think that there are way to many penalties being called anymore. And yes they are affecting the outcome of the game. I love the Avalanche but for an example they other night when they played the L.A. Kings. And beat them 6-1 there were so many penalties in that game the Avalanche got 3 goals from 5-3 player advantages. The Avalanche are great and could of probably won without these goals but the L.A. Kings had no chance to do anything because the Av's were always on a powerplay of some kind.

When I think about this I come up with two that I can't decide between. The non-call of Brett Hull's skate being int he crease in the 1999 Stanley Cup Final. They had made that call all year and to not make it hen was simply a horrible call (no I am not a Sabres fan). No way to know for sure that it changed the outcome of the series, but it sure made the NHL look bad. The second is one that would have changed the outcome of the Stanley Cup final. 2004 game 6, Calgary scores in OT and on the replay you can clearly see that the puck is over the line. I guess what really gets me about that one is that even with replay they couldn't get it right. If they do get that one right then Calgary wind the game and the Stanley Cup. No game 7 in Tampa would have been required (and no I am not a Flames fan either). PS: I think you are being hard on the Sabres GM over losing both Briere and Drury. He had extensions for both worked out and it was ownership that let those deals die.

WAY too many penalties are being called. It's the classic "nobody came to see the ref" syndrome. Penalties are determining the games now not the players in a lot of cases. But Bettman wanted scoring and he's going to get via 5 on 4 and 5 on 3's. It's a lame product that he's put out there.

I think the refs are calling everything from every team. That's the way it should be. The issue is if they let one call go they have to let the other teams "would be" penalty go. That could go on forever. I don't think they're determining the outcome of games at all. I think they are being very fair. If anything the players themselves are determining the outcome of the come. They need to be more careful. I remember watching my team play Buffalo. They had a lot of power plays and every time, they'd do something stupid and get a penalty, leaving them with a wasted power play.
In short I think it's a good thing, and the players need to be smarter.

I think players committing penalties are determining the games. The officials have been directed to call penalties, and that's what they're doing. The players are all aware of this, so if they continue to take penalties, it's their fault.

There have been some calls that I thought were questionable, but calling everything will ensure that players stick to the rules. The minute the refs start letting even the smallest infraction go, the players will take advantage of it.

Hockey is a hundred times better than it was a few years ago because of the rules crackdown. I hope they continue to call things in the same manner.

The 2 teams determine the game. Whether they are good enough to beat each other. Penalties plays a part in a game. Like if one team scores on a power play. They may not have scored that goal on full strength.I do think the refs are calling way to many penalties. They blow the whistle for everything.

Well for sure. The refs now a days are calling so many penalties, it usually ends up being the turning point of the game.

I think they are. Many penalties that are being called are penalties, but there are some that I look at and say that it cannot be a penalty. Many calls are being made that a few years ago, the players would have gotten away with. Trying to clear the crease is not a penalty. The defensemen have to do their job. I just think the referees are going to the extreme and they are determining the game.

yes they do in a way, its that there not consistent enough if they call a tripping penalty in one end and 3 minutes later the ref doesn't call the tripping penalties in the other end, and then the team scores. it would be OK if the refs were more consistent in the games. if your going to call one penalty then call the others.

i agree with some of the things Craig S is saying but don't forget like I said, if the refs are CONSISTENT then nobody will get as mad when the team loses call one call them all.

Actually, you watch some games, they are missing as many penalties as are called. Especially when it comes to obstruction. Carolina and Phili are two teams that get away with it a lot, and one Carolina got away with was th GW goal in game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals last season. But they are cleaning up the game by calling the penalties, so I can't really complain about tat aspect.
