How does the earth move in relation to the sun? Without the sun how might we define days or years? Would we continue to have seasons?

The earth 's movement can be explained in two perspective, one is by rotation as it rotates on it's own axis and the other is by revolving around the sun.

These movements occur at the same time. As it rotates on its own axis this makes it to have some (almost) half of its surface exposed to the light from the sun and thus on the part of the earth which is exposed we say it is daytime and the other side is at night and vice versa.

A day is an equivalent of the complete cycle of this event. It is imperative that you note that a new day starts at the time the sun sets though ordinarilly we assume that it starts at midnight whilst other assume a day starts at sunrise. Basically without the sun we would be plunged it to a one long night; ofcourse most creatures would die within some few days due to the enviromental imbalance which lack of sun will have brought .

Seasons on the other hand are influenced by the sun's revolution; as the earth is revolving round the sun it draws an ellipse round the sun; thus during a specific duration it will have part of the earth more closer to the sun than the other part i.e. in relation to position of the earth from the sun. These effect results in seasons, long days or long nights with different climatic conditions.

Also note that while rotation is always along the horizontal axis revolution is along the verticle axis. eg consider a boy sitting on a swing which is making complete loops; the boy - earth and the pivot becomes the sun. the swing makes the boy to move vertically and if we could make him to rotate on the swing's seat then his would be a perfect example of the situation with the earth.
