erros are when a defensive player fails to make a play that, in the opinion of the umpires, should've been made. some examples include theball passing between an infielder's legs, or a terrible throw to a baseman, an outfielder not catching a pop-up...and so on.
runners who get on base because of an error are not credited with a hit. and any runs scored by a runner who reached base from an error are not counted against the pitcher (that's where we get unearned runs).
have fun playing the game....and go CARDS!

BDP had it right...it's a play on which an out should have been made, but was not due to a physical miscue.
Also, errors have nothing to do with the judgement of the umpires. It's the official scorer who makes hit/error decisions.

An error is when a player makes a mistake on the field. At the professional level, there shouldn't be many fielding mistakes so that is why there is so few.

Errors are when a fielder has the chance to make an out and due to a physical miscue, does not get that out.

Errors are botched plays, like dropped fly balls, overthrows to basemen, muffed grounders, etc.
