It is a 3 inch long bee that lives under my sidewalk

I beg to differ with AskMike -- OUCH!! been there and stung by that -- hurts like .....

"In spite of their large size, the wasps (cicada killer) usually ignore people but they can give a painful sting if bothered. Mating males are aggressive and more easily disturbed."

And I wasn't disturbing it, either, just in the area where it was, so I guess it was a male -- figures! Hope you get yours "under control"

although they look vicious and scary they will all but avoid stinging you they arent an aggressive bee at all. you can zap them with a bee and wasp killer to get rid of them. fill the nest full.
