Yes, it is difficult. The thing worst is that while appeals are still in process, they maintain their innocence, and often you doubt that they are innocent. A person guilty might be forgiven, especially by one only befriending a inmate, but feeling that you are constantly lied to makes the whole situation even more difficult.
I try not to talk with them about their crimes.

Nope, but I read "In Cold Blood".
"After five years on death row, Smith and Hickock were executed by hanging for their crimes just after midnight on April 14, 1965 at the Kansas State Prison in Lansing, Kansas, (now known as Lansing Correctional Facility). A few hours earlier, they both requested and got a last meal consisting of shrimp, French fries, garlic bread, ice cream and strawberries with whipped cream. Hickock, then aged 33, died first at 12:41 a.m., and Smith, then aged 36, died at 1:19 a.m. The gallows from which they were hanged is now part of the collections of the Kansas State Historical Society."

If knowing someone through newspaper and TV reporting qualifies, then yes i knew a notorious criminal who would murder his victims after torturing them.
The guy (Ershad Sikder - ES) was so powerful in the region of Khulna district of Bangladesh for many years till he was put into jail that he could manage to bribe government officials in successive government and could continue to perpetuate his crime unabated.
Only after the present government of BNP came to power in 2001 (their tenure is being ended on 28th October 2006), this hardcore criminal ES was nabbed and after a prolong trial by court was hanged. I think most of my countrymen rejoiced at least for this death-row criminal’s hanging, if not for every hanging that take places in our country.
The affect of any type of killing is negative on the mind of peaceful people, whether these are done as per law or not. However, when the country turns to be ruled by warlords something like Somalia, then these warlords’ killing by justice department's official (after following due procedure) are some relief for the populace.

He deserved to be there and quite frankly knew it. He strangled a girl and worse. So he was rather looking froward to the Gas Chamber, his preference. He despised the Bleeding Heart Far Left Wing Liberal ACLU Adoring Democrats that always tried to stop his gassing! That was "Louie Da Lug" Levine executed March 18, 1986 Sing Sing N.Y.

Sure what turned out to be my best friend "D.B.Cooper" he is a lab and only had one day left before they were to put em down, so I adopted him. Best dog we have ever had. He has attitude, and can get crazy but I guess you would to if you were one day from the reaper.
