could be your laptop doesn't support firewire?
Normal desktop PC's with firewire have a "6 pin" connection which is the larger of the firewire connections ... laptops usually have "4 pin" connectors
6 pin connectors draw power through the cable 4 pin connectors don't

Chances are that you don't have a firewire port on your laptop. You haven't specified how old your laptop is; most new laptops from Dell, Sony and Apple have firewire ports on them, older ones usually don't. If you post the make and model of your laptop (e.g., Dell Inspiron 6400, Sony Vaio C Series, etc) it would be easier for someone to be able to help you. Alternatively, you could just go to your laptop manufacturer's website and try to look at the specifications for your model to see if it has a firewire port.

You probably do not have one. Firewire is not that common. Most laptops do not have it. Check the camera to see if it also has a USB port. If not, you can purchase a firewire card that would fit in the PC card slot on the laptop.
But if you can not find a port to plug it is, you probably do not have a firewire port.

You probably don;t have a firewire port, not all laptops do. You will be able to buy a USB cable for your camcorder instead or a USB to firewire converter.
