From Greek, argos: neutral, inactive.
A colorless, odorless gas, somewhat heavier than air. It was discovered in 1894 by Lord Raleygh and W. Ramsay, but over a centruy before, Cavendish had found that air contained about 1/120th of some gas other than oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. This small part was later proved to be mostly argon.
Argon is used to fill incandescent and flourescent light bulbs.

argon is in Grp 8 of the period table
which means it is a noble gas and it is stable (not reactive)
it is used to create inert surroundings for experiments involving alkali metals.
hope that helps :)
