Interesting question, once you go below zero you have nothing anyway. If you have no money and borrow £2 from someone you have
-£2 and if you borrow £8 you have -£8 so in that case -£2 is the smaller as its the less to pay back. But this seems to buck the majority view, as -8 is moving further away from zero.
Like I said interesting question !!

2 is smaller than 8 ,
then -8 will be smaller than -2
because-8 is 8 less than zero
and -2 is only 2 less than zero
