You don't see TKD or Karate in MMA because when MMA first started...people who used these arts were destroyed.
The best striking art out there is Muay Thai.

You can use TKD in MMA, but you need a lot more skills to be successful. Some of the MMA fighters come from a TKD or karate background, but have branched out and studied Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, boxing, Muay Thai, etc....

Tae Kwon Do is a decent "standing game" discipline meaning that you'll be able to handle yourself fairly well while on your feet.
but as far as ground game is concerned, unless you have the wrestling background or Judo or Jujitsu, if you get taken to the ground and aren't comfortable being there then you're in trouble be cause most techniques in TKD are based around the fact that the individual fighters remain on their feet.
and in ANY MMA competition, you have to have good standing game technique as well as good ground technique to work into your strategy to win matches.
TKD and the different Karate disciplines don't always rely on the power of the technique as Muay Thai does (most strikes in MT are based around the general area that the foot, knee, and shin or hand, elbow and forearm can cover, if you watch footage of MT matches you'll see the difference in these strikes, and how often they use front kicks or side kicks as opposed to roundhouses and such), but rather focuses on the exact area the strike should cover for the full effect on your opponent.

MMA fighters come from different backgrounds, however since TKD and karate are fairly well known, they don't use it much. They may incorporate some of the techniques but hence the term MMA, mixed martial arts.

There are some. It depends on the particular style of TKD. If you're in a school that emphasizes point fighting & puts a premium on speed at the cost of power, I think you will be in trouble. You should learn more than "a little" wrestling".

They do but it's not called MMA. The Marines & NAVY personnel attached to Marine corps have Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, & the ARMY has Modern Army Combatives (MAC) program.

TKD is not very good for fighting other people not using tkd. In my opinion its just crap. Most if what is taught is bullshido sold from a McDojo. You need more than a "bit" to keep from getting taken down.
