what you need is some kind of moulding wax to hold the hair. Then you part your hair depending on the size you want the locks to be then you twist the hair tightly while applying the wax so it can hold. And every time your hair grows, say after a week or two you will need to twist the growth.
You can also wash the hair weekly and apply hair oil to make it shine.it dont mean you have to leave your hair dirty and untidy.
You should be ok n good luck.

Dreads rock. Here's the hassle-free way I've used to make 'em happen without wax, honey, work, time, or itchy scalp. Like any method for making dreads, the hair should be about three times as long as you expect the dreads to be. Some of your hair will break off in this process. IF YOU HAVE THIN HAIR, you don't want to do it this way. I tried other ways and they were too much of a hassle for me.
Fill a pot or bucket with 50% clorox bleach. Flip your hair upside down and let as much of it as possible soak in the bleach. This will dry the hair so that it knots. Adjust time spent soaking and concentration (percent bleach) to the thickness of your hair. Mine is pretty coarse, so I took twenty minutes with a few two minute breaks because my eyes burned. WEAR GOGGLES to avoid getting bleach vapors in your eyes. Avoid letting the bleach set on your skin or it'll get dry and itchy.
Next rinse the hair REALLY GOOD. If you want, you can separate and shape the dreads as they form over the next few days, by gently teasing and cutting them apart and rolling them between your hands to join them.
The bleach dries out your hair real good; that's what causes the knotting. Like I said, expect some of it to break and fall off.

It's all merely a matter of personal preference. I actually have short hair and guys just like it. And i prefer a man with short hair over a man with long hair because long hair tends to make guys look too girly.

You need to find someone who can put them in for you. Its a kinda twisting/back combing type of thing.
Or you could just leave your hair alone. Dont brush/wash it etc

Why would you want to? Your hair will never be the same again. Keep your hair long, straight and natural.
