You would probably be better off searching from your home country. Here in the USA we tend to get regional tour companies - New England leaves or California Wineries, for example. The country is so huge geographically that you need to narrow your choices before finding a localized tour, I would think.
Do you want wild beauty? Western mountain ranges and a dude ranch would be awesome. Do you want culture and US History? New York, Boston and Washington DC. Do you want manufactured fun for your kids? Florida and Disney have a lock on that one.

Go see your travel agent preferably an independent one that would be able to either do a individual itinerary or show you what available from lots of different travel companies. Any decent travel agent worth their salts will have no problem with this.
