Sorry if this has been asked for many times. My puppy is hospitalised at the moment, the vet said he's likely to pull through. The question is, will my puppy catch parvo again if he survives? the vet didnt give me a clear answer (doh). From what i've gathered from websites, parvo can be caught again and some websites say my pup will be immune to it for life. My family has a lot of children I cannot prevent them from touching my pup during my absence (you cannot be sure your house is thoroughly disinfected) And the last question is :- will plain yogurt help restoring the damage intestinal tract? Apparently my wallet is totally drained, I cant afford any more probiotic shots ;( I need an extra job! And yes, I will get my pup vaccinated once it recovered. thanks.

p/s: does anyone know other ways to restore intestinal tract? since yogurt might be acidic and cause more tummy upset.

Hi- I hope your pup pulls through.

To answer your questions- if a dog has had parvo and survives, they should have very good long-term immunity. This may or may not be lifelong- depends on the individual dog. So no, he shouldn't catch parvo again. You should keep up his parvo vaccinations though.

The best way to manage him diet-wise (I'm assuming you mean once he's out of hospital) is to feed a bland and easily digestible diet- something like Hills i/d or Purina EN if you are looking at commercial foods, or something like chicken and rice if you want to do it yourself.

It should never be able to get the virus again and usually the vet will go ahead and administer the first shot then you will have to go and get a booster within 2-3 weeks.

The pup is on antibiotics right now and most likely have been give steroid injections, (mine was) The vet will tell you to go ahead and feed the dog small portions of a nutritional food. (NOT science diet please) Science diet is a crappy food and the vets promote this food as they get a 40 percent profit on this crap. go with an all natural food like innova, canidae, wellness, nutro, solid gold.
The stuff at your grocery store or vets office is no good for your dog as it is filled with nothing but fillers and cancer causing agents.
Petco or petsmart has good dog foods you can buy.
You can give a dog yogurt, it will not hurt the dog and it is easy on the digestive track.
