Mami is a very old southern word, it was used to dicribe an older black lady, usualy a lady that worked in the big house cleaning or cooking or some other menaul labor. Today if you called a black lady mami it could be considered a great insult, however, coming from a loved one it could also be considered a term of endearment i suppose.

In Southern India (Chennai), the term Mama is refered to Uncle and Mami is refered to Aunty (Uncle's wife).
Men also refer their fiancee as Mami (in slang)
May be your bf, with some indian connection, would have learnt this mami and using on you.
