Is it an outdated idea from when women were too repressed to express themselves appropriately. Today's women have more confidence and strength and don't need to be envious of men or do they?

Please state your age when replying and sex .... as I would be interested in the answers and these factors....

I woudn't say it's envy, but I do wonder what it would be like to have one - purely out of curiosity ;-)
The whole concept of "penis envy" is definitely old school these days - society in fact seems to be reversing the roles of the sexes as women become more independent, are making conscious decisions not to get married or have kids and are taking on jobs that years ago would have been seen as male only professions. I'm in the construction industry myself and it is still a very male-dominated environment but not nearly as much as it was in the 60s for example. Men on the other hand are evolving too - the idea of a "house-husband" or "new man" would have been scoffed at decades ago but now is becoming increasingly common.
I don't feel that women need to be envious of men in the slightest (except perhaps the fact they don't have those annoying monthly "problems") but I have met meny men who are envious of women and this appears to be more the case now that women are beginning to wield more power in society than they ever have. I'm 26 and female by the way.

Cannot think of anything less enviable than being the possessor of one of those.

No, but seriously, I think 'penis envy', though quite derogatory in it's tone, still applies today. It is a simple fact, shown time and time again in research, that men still have the 'upper hand'; in careers, in schools, at home... everywhere.

I have been conducting research with a group of people about men and women in public speaking roles, and we found that, when having a 'mutual debate' (this is a group of three women and three men) that the men dominated the 'speaking time' on a ratio of roughly 3:1. They talked over the top of the women on a regualr basis, often appeared not to be listening to the women speak, and occasionally, responded in a derisive fashion.

So what could we conclude from this? That men still feel, even in this day and age, that what they have to say is of more value than what women have to say. And this would still have powerful repurcussions across every arena of our lives.

Ironic, really.

I am female and 25, by the way.

Male 30+ Umm I dont believe women suffer penis envy at all, except at certain times of month, then I'm sure they do then, so I'm told.(wink) OR whilst waiting to go to loo, Males can nick behind tree, well women find that too hard in most cases.

Other than that NO women do not suffer penis envy, funny tho cos different women have told me they would love nothing better than to havea penis for a day, then let us be on receiving end when don't feel like it.....cheers

I am a woman aged 32 confident and out going and I would never want to be a man in any shape or form I think women are lucky to be sexy with curves and feminity, and can still dominate a man, men can be weak in all sorts of ways, although I am certainly not a man hater at all, I think men should be men and women be women, but men should treat women with more respect now days which doesn't seem to happen often, but then are woman giving them the idea that they can do this as they are trying to be seen as equals ?? :0)

I would not think that today's women suffer in that way. Why should you, you can do just as well in life as any man. The list of successful women is growing all the time.
As a man I would happily support a successful women. In fact I could be turned on by a powerful business woman. So if there are any reading this I'm here for you. ;-)

Personally, I don't suffer from penis envy. I think this is a stupid idea. I think in the past women have felt envious of men - their ability to choose careers and not have the confines of society placed on them. Why should this be "penis envy"?
I think it is resentment at being a suppressed female, which is totally logical.

Absolutely YES. I suffer from penis envy. My boyfriend is obsesed with the size of his and drives me insane as he goes on and on and on about his and every other bloke who walks past. So therefore I suffer! Maybe he's a closet gay. Hmmm. I think we need a chat when I get home.....
