Anyone know if it's technically legal to perform a piercing on someone over the age of 18 who asks you to pierce them? Where would I find this information for different states?

I know the dangers of having it done... I'm really just wondering about how legit someone HAS to be to pierce me, or for a friend... you know.

It's illegal if you don't have the consent from the person getting the tattoo especially if they are minors. Now if you are doing this for one of you buddies just be careful and sterilize everything.

Okay. It SHOULD be illegal for any moron to pick up a needle and pierce his/her friends, but its not. I don't know why you would just grab the first needle you find and shove it in. Its not clean, its not safe, its not smart. But if you do it, there is really nothing that either party can be held responsible for other than stupidity.

Piercers learn about anatomy, veins, nerves, techniques, sterilization, safety, after-care and lots of other things. Chances are, most people don't know what a piercer knows. Piercers also have release forms stating that you volunteered for this and its your fault if something goes wrong once you leave the shop. They should also be the legal age in their state before the pierce anyone (18 or 21 in some places)

There is not class you take and no diploma you get when you become a piercer, you just have to pass the safety and health guidelines and check about state requirements. Each state is different, but those issues deal with health and safety, not the actual skill of knowing how to pierce. I trained for 1.5 years doing each piercing at leave 20 times or more before my apprenticeship was over. I went to the same man for 18 of my piercings and after a while, I asked if he would help me learn and he did. I've been piercing for 3.5 years now and I still learn new things from time to time. So if you want to find someone legit to do piercings, start by looking in tattoo shops and start by talking with them about what they know and what they pierce. Never trust a piercer without a piercing.

In some states you need a business licence to do it as a professional (where you have clients and they pay you for it) but if it's just you and a friend, both over 18, both consenting to it, there are no laws against it. When you get into some heavier stuff (using a dermal punch or scalpel for example) it does become illegal because it's considered practicing medicine without a licence. The only people who are allowed to do that are doctors. I'm not too familiar with all the laws in the US, but I know it does vary from state to state. But simply putting a needle through someone - not illegal between consenting adults. Basically, because it's still a very un-regulated field, you don't need any real qualifications to pierce or tattoo.

Having said that, it is much better to go to a professional, or get some training (I've taught a few people the ins and outs of play piercing, such as how to create a sterile field, cross contamination, etc) Just make sure to check out your professional to make sure they are one!

For most states it is illegal to pierce even a legal consenting adult without a piercing license from the Department of Health. Tattoo artists are also unallowed to pierce without a specific license. You can find out the specific information for your state at http://tattoojoy.com/tattoo_laws/index.php

I'm sure you have to have a license. But for legal matters, and health safety. You should go to someone that knows what they are doing. Because they steralize and/or use all new equipment. If you do it yourself you have the possible problem of getting an infection, and that will cost you a lot more than getting it done professionaly.

laws differ in different states. but you can pierce yourself or others if they say they want you to or ask you. you dont need a license, its just better to go to someone who does, b/c they know what they are doing rather than guess how to do it.

21 is the consenting age in the States. Plus you must give written consent so that you won't be able to sue the one doing it to you ie you take the deed into your own hands even if you become septic
