Allahu Akbar is a shortened form of the Arabic phrase Allahu Akbar min kulli shay, which means "God is greater than everything."
in Islam religion, Allah has 99 names (traits or characteristics)
we use Allah Akbar during praying, tasbeeh (some sort of worshiping), pilgrimage and many other Islamic activities.
by saying that, ur like certifying that God is the greatest.
among the 99 names are "al Kareem" which means the most generous, "al Jabbar" the powerful..etc
when we use those names during our prayers it makes u feel closer to God.
please take a look at this website, u'll know more

We believe that we should constantly be in remembrance of God. This is just one of the sayings that help us. Others are alhumdillah(praise be to God) subhanAllah(Glory be to God) mashaAllah(God has willed) and many more. Allahu Akbar is also said when you hear good news. It is also used in the 5 ritual prayers between the movements. We believe that God is the greatest and nothing is better then Him. So saying this means there is nothing besides Him, He is the greatest to us. When we are excited we think of Him and remember he is the greatest.

God is Greater...means God is greater than all other things. His is above all things possible. No one is equal to him. No one shares his power. All things happen with is permission (good or Bad). He is the only savior.
