If so, how can you be defensive when others ridicule Christianity?

I'm not a Christian and I don't ridicule... I just post the facts. This is what Scientologists ACTUALLY believe:

Xenu was an alien ruler of the "Galactic Confederacy" who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of people to Earth in spacecrafts resembling Douglas DC-8 airliners, stacked them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs. Their souls then clustered together and stuck to the bodies of the living. The alien souls continue to do this today, causing a variety of physical ill-effects in modern-day humans. L. Ron Hubbard (a science-fiction writer and the creator of Scientology) called these clustered spirits "Body Thetans," and the advanced levels in Scientology place considerable emphasis on isolating them and neutralizing their ill effects.

To rid ourselves of "Body Thetans" and also “engrams” (past negative experiences stored in our unconscious mind) so that we can become “clear”, we have to go through "auditing" with a member of the “church” who uses an "e-meter" to measure our “reactive mind”...... and we have to pay lots and lots and lots of money for “auditing” (purchased in 12.5-hour blocks, costing anywhere from $750 for introductory sessions to between $8,000 and $9,000 for advanced sessions) and to take courses on Scientology to advance to higher “levels” in the “church”. The “church” has also taken a very hostile stance towards psychiatry and psychiatric drugs irrespective of the fact that some people require medication to remain adequately functional in everyday life and has been known to withhold prescription pharmaceuticals from member (with deadly results).

Scientology is undeniably a cult. Every cult can be defined as a group having all of the following five characteristics:

(1) It uses psychological coercion to recruit, indoctrinate and retain its members [convincing potential members that they are unhappy and Scientology is the only means of helping themselves]. (2) It forms an elitist totalitarian society. [they label everyone who disagrees or questions as a “Suppressive Person” and requires members to “disconnect” from them] (3) Its founder leader is self-appointed, dogmatic, messianic, not accountable and has charisma. [Yes, that would be Hubbard] (4) It believes 'the end justifies the means' in order to solicit funds & recruit people. (5) Its wealth does not benefit its members or society. [self evident proof for 4 & 5 as it does milk members for virtually everything they have and it’s wealth doesn’t find it’s way back to it’s members or society at all]

Cults are extremely harmful. To remain within the strict mental and social confines of a cult for even a short time can have the following disastrous effects:

Loss of choice and free will. Diminished intellectual ability, vocabulary and sense of humor. Reduced use of irony, abstractions and metaphors. Reduced capacity to form flexible and intimate relationships. Poor judgment. Physical deterioration. Malnutrition. Hallucinations, panic, dissociation, guilt, identity diffusion and paranoia. Neurotic, psychotic or suicidal tendencies.

As I understand it, years ago Scientology started out as a philosoply, not a religion. I'm not sure when that changed (or DID it?). People of many religions found information, additional peace of mind, assistance in understanding or solving problems, etc. without abandoning the traditions of their own religion or belief system. I'm not sure where things stand now. Scientology, as many other philosophies or beliefs, seem to have some good, some bad.

I don't ridicule anyone's path on this earth. And anyone who does .... well, I don't let that affect me. The only thing that affects me is how someone treats me. I think the only time a person gets defensive is when someone attacks their way of thinking ... insisting that they are "wrong" for the way they think or live. (FYI--I am Catholic, & have many friends who are Scientologists, Buddhists, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Jews, etc and have never had a problem with any of them -- maybe you should just avoid people who are into "ridicule".)

i do not even imagine validity might want to also be an element. notwithstanding if one is valid and the different isn't, then why not in basic terms enable human beings be human beings and believe what they'll? fortunately not all Christians are that aggressive or unfeeling. the final public are good loving human beings. And, no, i do not trust you that Scientology is faux or that that is as faux as Christianity because i don't think of Christianity is faux, both. i do not position self assurance in bundles of concepts- take one take all. i imagine Christianity has diverse actuality and sweetness in it and that i have absolutely stumbled on diverse actuality and sweetness in Scientology. No offense, yet you wrote a question about those who ridicule different religions, then you definitely proceed to publicly state both religions are faux. How is that any different from those whom you criticize?

Im niether but the lesser of two evils seems to be scientology. The whole organization seems totally ludicrous to me. It was created by a science fiction writer, so logically his musings would be science fiction. Nuff said

On the basis that Almighty God let us know His standards and requirements by having the Bible written [ by 40 writers over 1500 years and confirmed by (2 Timothy 3:16-17) All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.

It was written for our GOOD.

From this we learn that God created everything. Even Jesus [ Proverbs 8;22-31]
And Jesus died for us, to buy back for us the right to live without death. [ Revelation 21;4,,,Psalm37; 11,29]
Us, the people on the earth.
And Jesus died ONCE FOR ALL TIME...1 Peter 3;18. As God's ONLY son who died ONLY once, this leaves no 'room' for any other intelligent creation.
Such as intelligent alien people on other planets.
HOWEVER, this does not preclude US EVENTUALLY finding some form of ANIMAL LIFE ELSEWHERE IN THE UNIVERSE. This is pure speculation based on logic.
It is INTELLIGENT life, created in God's IMAGE, that is exclusive to the planet earth.
SCIENTOLOGY believes otherwise. It is opposed to God's plan of using the earthly situation to bring us to perfection.
Finally, with no death or sickness [ Rev. 21;4] and with the earth beautified back to equivalent of the garden of Eden, THEN may God allow us into HIS universe.
Hubbard was "jumping the gun" a bit.

For me, some things in life are just too inherently ridiculous to waste time ridiculing them...

I do not,, in fact I read about it in search of its healing properties. I expect foolish baseless criticism. The Bible tells us in advance it will happen. What the critics do not know is when we take it in love then we get more rewards in the end so

let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be, these are words of wisdom, let it be, let it be.
