Large Vodka - Diet coke

The common belief that 'brown' spirits (whisky, brandy, etc.) are somehow more calorific than clear ones (vodka, gin, etc.) is false. Similarly, beer isn't more 'fattening' than wine, if you drink equivalent quantities of alcohol. The main source of energy ('calories') in all alcoholic drinks is the alcohol itself. Hence it follows that the higher the alcohol content, the higher the energy content - simple as that!

However, if you want to achieve the same 'effect' (degree of intoxication) you pretty much need the same quantity of alcohol, and whether you get it from 10 pints of beer or 1 pint of vodka doesn't much matter, as either way you'll get the same alcohol calories.

Of course there are normal sugars present in most drinks as well, and if you drink sweet wines, liqueurs, cocktails, etc., or alternatively use a sugary mixer with a spirit, you're going to get loads of extra calories from the sugars. Therefore, the answer is, stick to non-sugary mixers, dry wines, 'diät pils' and other low-carb beers, etc., and you can avoid the sugar calories at least, even if you can't avoid the alcohol calories.

Vodka contains slightly fewer calories than other shorts - 50 calories for a shot compared with 60 calories for a whisky, but if you add a sugary mixer, you'll get more calories from the mixer than from the alcohol. Try a Vodka and diet coke.
Problem is that alcohol suppresses the rate of fat burn-off, so even though you might not be gaining calories from the alcohol itself, its preventing you from burning off calories from other foods.

All mixed sweet drinks have sugar. Beer has a lot (maltose). Believe or not tonic has most sugar of all the mixers. If you don't believe put a drop of tonic aside with a drop of any soft drink and let them dry, tonic will leave stickier residue.

I would drink long drinks with sugar free mixers like rum an coke (light) or gin, lemon and sprite (light) = Tom Collins I've even learned to drink whiskey soda. Red wine (not lambrusco or some sweet stuff) or dry white are always good choices.
