no need for the passport to expire, you can renew your passport 3 - 6 months before the expiry date

If you have changed your name (if you were recently married or divorced) you would want to apply for a new passport.

And since Sept. 11, you must renew your passport within the six months previous to its expiration date (I think its your birthday?)

which country. normally yuo do not need to wait for its expiry. in fact, a lot of countries require travellers to have 3 - 6 months of validity on their passports before allowig entry.
