I have a 2 bed-room flat in Ahmedabad, Western India. I want to buy the adjacent flat, remove the partition wall and make a it a big 4 bed-room flat. A friend discouraged me stating that expansion towards south is not advisable. I want a second opinion. If moving towards south is not advisable, can I buy the southside flat in my wife's name, live there for some time and then move towards the north after removing the partition wall? (At present I don't live in my flat).

I think you need to do more investigation about the expansion. Do all others believe it is not advisable? Can your friend give examples or explain why?

I have seen many instances when expansion towards the south was very successful. It is not a well defined caution, but instead is very dependant on the circumstances.
