I think you are asking the wrong question...it should be if an Alsation would fit into your lifestyle. Trying to find the minimum walking time for a dog is just cruel because they need more than the minimum. If you don't have the time/ energy/ or inclination to spend a lot of your free time walking or playing with a pet then you should reconsider the pet. Remember that walking and playing with a pet is not only a form of exercise but also a bonding experience. You should only choose pets that fit to your way of life and your enviroment.

Hi as an ex German Shepherd/Alsatian breeder for 22 years the exercise thing is a big depends on what you want you want the dog for & yes that sounds a little silly but let me explain...
For a pet puppy then a couple of hours a day for a pup is fine & increase it as he grows to what you can give him.(Always best to have two dogs as one exercises the other)..
However for a show dog you need very little work until he is at least 7 months of age due to the fact that you will lose the angulation of the hindquarters if over exercised at an early age..They should look like all there joints need a tightening up for those 7 months...then comes the hard roadwork that hardens the dogs muscules as a full able working dog...hope this helps but I'm always around for people if they need help with dogs...Regards Jake http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PetsSecondChance

We used to have an alsation, a gsd x and a lab.....vet advised us to walk each dog twice a day and for at least 20 mins each walk. We used to do 30 mins each walk sometimes they got 1 walk which lasted 1.30hrs.

I say that the minimum is 30 mins in the morning and 30 mins in the evening. It would need to be free to run around during this period and pavement plodding won't tire him out. If you take toys along you can get him to cover a lot of ground in those 30 mins.
Try and take him for a longer walk on weekends to tire him out and keep his fitness levels up.

Alsatians are big dogs, therefore they should be given a lot of exercise. I'd say two hours probably - an hour's walk in the morning and an hour in the evening, would probably be the mimimum.

20 minutes MAXIMUM.
It is a myth that big dogs need loads of exercise. Alsatians are prone to arthritis.

Rule of thumb for dogs is one mile for every foot. Meaning if the dog is four foot from nose to end of tail, you should walk him at least four miles (at least).
