Its the month most muslims believe that the Quran (our holy text) was first revealed on to the Holy Prophet i.e. on the 27th of Ramadan to be precise. It's not called ramadad but Ramadan.
The basic principal is to observe a physical & spiritual fast. Physical fast would be to not eat or drink anything. Spiritual would be to more tolerant towards others and not hurt anybody emotionally or physically (not that one should do it otherwise, but be more careful). The physical fast is to appreciate what god has blessed it with and not be ungrateful for things we don't have but be grateful for what we have as all of us may not be that lucky. To understand how les fortunate people go without them during their lives and to feel for them so that we help them better by charity etc.
The spiritual bit of it is to get close to god and ask for forgiveness as God is most generous during the month.
The fasting is usually from dusk till dawn and for 29-30 days depending on the lunar calendar. At the end of the month, we celebrate with a big feast called Eid. Which again is to celebrate life by inviting our relatives and friends to feasts and exchanging presents just like thanksgiving basically or Xmas even. We also have to donate money to charity or material goods to less fortunate people.
Hope this was useful in understanding us. We may all follow different religions but by nature all humans have a good heart.
Peace out!

The first parts of the Quraan was revealed in this month. We therefore have great respect for it and celebrate during the month. It is meant to be a month of increased spiritual awareness and we also fast from before sunrise to sunset. From the morning to early evening prayers. The pupose is to feel the suffering of the less fortunate and become more humble and charitable. We are also encouraged to give up other luxaries and pleasures during the month and carry the attitude through to the rest of our lives. there are also extra prayers made in the late evening and at the end of ramadaan we have eid ul fitr. When we visit family and friends and give greetings and charity in good spirits. In some countries Eid is a public holiday. You are also not allowed to have sex while you are fasting.

Ramadan is derived from the Arabic root word ramida denoting intense scorching heat and dryness.
Fasting was prescribed to followers of other prophets as well according to Qura'n.
"O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint." (Quran 2:183)
Ramadan is a special month of the year for over one billion Muslims throughout the world. It is a time for inner reflection, devotion to God, and self-control. Muslims think of it as a kind of tune-up for their spiritual lives.
The third "pillar" or religious obligation of Islam, fasting has many special benefits. Among these, the most important is that it is a means of learning self-control. Due to the lack of preoccupation with the satisfaction of bodily appetites during the daylight hours of fasting, a measure of ascendancy is given to one's spiritual nature, which becomes a means of coming closer to God. Ramadan is also a time of intensive worship, reading of the Qur'an, giving charity, purifying one's behavior, and doing good deeds.
As a secondary goal, fasting is a way of experiencing hunger and developing sympathy for the less fortunate, and learning to thankfulness and appreciation for all of God's bounties. Fasting is also beneficial to the health and provides a break in the cycle of rigid habits or overindulgence.
