Personally, I think it's best to eat something light just before you work out. The worst feeling in the world is to have like a half throw up feeling when you are really working out hard. Before a really strenuous workout, I would suggest watered down juice or gatorade. You can eat after the workout.

As long as it's not high in sugar, just about anything is good to eat. An apple will supply you with more energy than a cup of coffee. If you're working out hard, I recommend eating at leadt an hour before.

toast with a little jam. there's some sugar and a complex carb to go with it. some folk say pears or bananas. that's cool, too. i'd still stick with toast w/jam. afterward, almonds. they have free-radical-fighting antioxidants that help curb the breaking down in your muscles after a workout.

Definitely keep it light. I normally have some fruit before working out.

high carbs (rice, pasta) and potassium-rich (bananas) food - they'll help in producing more energy and ease lactic acid build-up.
drink water but not too much.
