This is because god was created by humans at a time that males dominated. Therefore god was written in as a male entity. If it makes you feel better, a lot of other religions through history used or uses a female god. It has to do with the creation of life (birth).

It's not an insult to name things. It is a sign of respect. Consider a parent who refers to their child as "what's-its-name." Referring to the child by a name is respectful. Referring to the child as "it" or "that thing" is dismissive.

We don't know God's name, so we do our best, and some of us agree on a name that points to--but does not define--the creator of all things good.

As for a gender, again, it is disrespectful to refer to someone as "what's-its-name."

When Adam fell from Paradise, he began naming things. He remembered God, and he called him God.

I do my very best not to define the "Higher Power" by gender or even name. I'm comfortable with "Energy Source" "Nature's God" or any name or label a person chooses to refer to him/her/it. (I'm fine with people who believe that no "greater being" above themselves exists).

I am certainly not an expert on the subject.
