can any one help me with a cobol program that uses a sort with an input and output pro to find top 3 students?

it is a program i am doing for one of my lecturers

You'll probably find more useful information on an HP online library website than IBM's. IBM programmers generally passed files on to the sort utility and read the results in a second program. Other vendors focused more attention on the Input/Output Sections of COBOL in their documentation.
