He's looking for interesting smells. Dogs sense of smell is literally 1,000 times stronger than ours. It's also very different. We can no more understand what a dog smells than a dog can understand what we're reading. Fortunately, this inability to understand the senses of the other doesn't get in the way of just appreciating the other.

He is not necessarily looking to anything, just being "nosy". We have a great dog we got from a shelter that has a strong sniffing instinct and she smells everything! She will even stand out on our back porch with her nose in the air sniffing the wind. Beagles were bred for hunting and part of the hunting instinct is having nose to the ground tracking the prey. Your boy is just doing what comes natural.

I once worked for a beagle breeder, and asked him about getting a beagle for my kids. He STRONGLY discouraged me from doing that.

Beagles are created by God and humans to be nose-down, following some animal scent that they've just discovered. They are happiest when they're half-running with their nose 1" for the ground. That's her job, in the same way that my sheltie's job is to herd sheep.

You are a wise man for letting your pet do the sniffing. If you didn't let him do his "job" then you'd have one miserable, stressed-out dog, and nothing good would come from that.

He's a hound dog! That's what scent-hounds were bred for-to sniff out game. He's just doing what comes naturally to him.I used to have a beagle(he wasn't a hunting dog)and to let him "track" something,I would tie a rope to one of his toys ( I let him smell it first),then drag it around the yard or the house and let him find it with his nose.He never failed. He would even find toys hidden in trees! And he would find my niece and nephew, too;they played hide and seek and Otis always found them.Once,I lost one of my box turtles.I looked everywhere, even digging up her enclosure, but I thought she had escaped. Then Otis came outside, and I put him in the turtle enclosure just to see what he would do,and what do you know,he ran right over to a corner of the pen and started digging, and soon ,there was that turtle, buried down about a foot.So that's why your dog sniffs everything. He just likes to use his nose.Make it a game for him to find things-it's fun for you and your dog!

For beagles - like most dogs bred for hunting and tracking - this is simply normal behaviour. It is not that they are looking for any one thing in particular, but often rather their way of investigating/exploring their environment. You have to remember that for dogs, smell is one of the most important senses - in fact scientists are beginning to realise that smell may even be the most important sense even for human, greatly effecting the way in which we interact with our environment - even effecting how we are attracted to the opposite sex.

All I can say is that you're lucky he actually come back when you call him - beagles are renowned for completely ignoring their masters when in their "zone" - I know ours did!

My beagle is the same! Sniffs the same tree every day, but when it comes to return home from our walks, she's dead straight, nose to the ground, knows right where to go.

Dogs sense things through their sense of smell. For him, sniffing is like reading the newspaper to find out who's been doing what where.

It's a dog thing, but especially a beagle thing. They are simply smelling their environment, it is their primary sense.
