I purchased a trailer (CA) without a deed and no bill of sale. How do I go about registering under my name?

List it as home made.
There is a lot of pick up truck beds that have had wheels added that is a home made trailer

Go back to the seller and get the title and a bill of sale. You can't register or title it without that.

You might be able to apply for an abandoned title. This will take several months as the DMV will attempt to locate the current owner to verify if they have any claim to the trailer. You won't be allowed to use the trailer until the DMV completes their investigation. It's very possible that it may turn up as stolen. If that happens, it will be confiscated and returned to the legal owner and you may be arrested for possession of stolen property.

Don't waste your time trying to claim that it was home made -- especially if it's not actually a home made trailer! Home made trailers require a CHP inspection and if it was ever legally registered or titled they will quickly determine that fact. You'll then have to go the abandoned title route unless it turns up as stolen at which point they'll confiscate it and probably arrest you for possession of stolen property.

go to DMV and do a search on the title to see who owned it before and right a letter to the people and see what they know if they don't know or if they are the ones that you got it from you need to get a release of liability for it and sign it over to you then do all the paper work at DMV

You have to go to DMV first talk with them then go to CHP and have them check if its road worthy, light blinkers, ect,ect. then they "sign it off" then go back to DMV and complete the paper work. Plan for atleast half a day on this one or longer if its never been registerd! (more red tape) good luck!
