In the United States, widespread belief in the existence of laws against driving barefoot has been debunked as an urban legend. Members of the Society for Barefoot Living wrote letters to the highway patrols of all 50 states and were told by officials in each state that driving barefoot was not illegal.

I heard that in some places that it is. This law is practicaly unenforceable. All a barefooted driver had to do is to slip on a pair of flip flops before exiting the car.

It very well may depend on what state you live in. I think it is one of those laws that exist to prove a point, but where really never ment to be enforced, nore would someone want to take the time to care if you are, or are not wareing them. But, I would recommend wareing them to the car, and then taking them off once your in it.

If you get pulled over, and not having any shoes at all, would look pretty stupid dont you think?

I know for a fact that it is not illegal in Texas, I asked a cop. He said that although in some cars the pedals might get hot and cause a problem for bare feet, there is no law to force you to wear shoes.

If you want to know for sure, ask a cop, they tend to know these kind of things.

It is in my state, but I think that it's one of those laws that wouldn't get you into any trouble unless the cops really wanted to get you for something.

G'day moefan,

Thank you for your question.

It is probably a case of it depends which jurisdiction you are in. It is illegal in Belgium or Hong Kong. It isn't illegal in any of the US states with the exception of Alabama but it is frowned upon. It is also legal in Germany.

I have attached sources for your reference.

Regards
