I was born in 1960 so chronologically I'm over 40, but mentally I'm about 21. My preferred workout is roller skating. I go every week. Good cardio workout, great for balance, and low impact except if you fall, something I don't do unless I do something stupid like getting trapped behind a group of fallers without an available escape.

I don't think it's necessarily preferred - but advised. As we grow older our bodies take longer to heal, our muscle groups become tighter and limit our flexibility. Further, some of us may start to feel the begins of arthritic pain.
Doing regular exercise in the gym may and can even hurt the body because our bodies were once used to lifting heavier weights. With yoga, you are working with your own body's weight.
Yoga helps improve posture, flexibility and alleviate the pains that the body is feeling. It's like oil to the machine. Regular exercise just can not bring this flexibility to the body.
Another little known fact is, that 75% of people are sent to old folks homes because of incontinence. Yoga, if done correctly and mainly because of the breathing techniques applied, helps prevent incontinence.
Yoga helps with the maintenance of the body while doing the least amount of harm through the prevention of high impact stresses. At the age of 40 and up, the body needs all the maintenance it can get.
