a car.. if you can afford it ..lol...or maybe a... new stereo system or ipod.. or something portable he can use when he goes back , of course you know your son better than anyone else ever could, so perhaps something related to his favorite hobby / pass-time? congrats on your son coming home, have a wonderful holiday together!!

My husband is in the Army so I might know a few things that could help. Since he is in the Army, its sad to say that chances are he will be going to Iraq sometime, if he hasnt already been. So I would get him things he could use over there. Portable DVD players are good, laptop if he doesnt have one already, create a small, lightweight scrapbook that he could keep in an ACU pocket (they are about big enough to hold the size of half a sheet of paper), Ipod, digital camera, webcam so he an see the people back home, maybe a journal to write in (even if he doesnt write now, he might when he gets over there), books he might be intersted in, money (everyone likes that), if he has a religion preference you could get him a necklace that pertains to that religion (that is the only thing they can wear besides a wedding ring and their dog tags, that is something my husband requested before he left the first time), i have run out of ideas but I hope this helps you some. You talk as if he is just getting out of basic so if so, Welcome to the Army life. Good luck with the gifts.

You don't say if your son has been in an overseas assignment or is just coming out of basic training.
Assuming he has been serving in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Lebanon, or another "hot spot", I would suggest you have a few of his closest friends over for a Bar-B-Que or informal get-together, and see where it goes from there. If he wants to stay home, fine. If he wants to go "out on the town", accept it.
If your son is just coming out of basic training, he will still want to "kick up his heels". He will not want to spend his leave time at home with his parents, even though he loves, respects, and admires you. Give him his space. Be proud of him. He's willing to put his life on the line for you and me.

Get him a book about dating and marriage, one of those guidebooks for how to do it the right way. If you are religious there are probably books on that topic that you can find through your religion. If you are secular, then you can get something like
"Dating for Dummies".
You said your son has everything but I am guessing he needs a wife. Even better than giving him a book, is if you know someone that meets your approval, that you could introduce him to.

How about calling cards to keep in contact with people. Or maybe even one night at a sporting event (favorite nfl team, nba team, hockey, etc.). That'd be really nice

Throw a lil party for him and his friends complete with alchol and girls, if not that then get him one of those cool looking gadgets that no one really needs, but can brag about from Sharper Image.
