Laziness due to the increased convenience of everyday life, decreasing activity, lack of proper public transportation (forcing people to use their cars instead of walk), need for fast food of low quality, increase in unnatural preservatives in food, and the fact that most of our work can be done without lifting more than a few fingers.

Fast food plays a major role. Also, children don't play outside that much anymore partly because their parents need to accompany them wherever they go because there are a lot more wackos out there nowadays and some parents don't have the time to do that. Kids used to be able to go everywhere by themselves without their parents worrying, but now with all these abductions happening, they are more hesitant (with good reason, of course) to let their children out by themselves. As I said, that is just one of the reasons why kids don't play outside as much, another one being technology. That is why my little brother is overweight. He's 9 years old, 4' 6'', and 110 lbs. All he does is play PS2, watch TV, play PS2 with his friend, eat (a LOT) and do his homework after being nagged for 2-5 hours. (He also ate MY donuts. We got a dozen donuts, I eat one, go to bed because I'm sick and sleep like 15 hours a day, wake up, and they're all gone! Apparently he woke up and everyone else was asleep, so he drank coke and ate 5 donuts. Everyone got more than me. We don't get donuts that often,so I wanted to at least have more than one. Plus when I'm sick, I like to eat donuts lol. Plus I need to gain weight, and while it may not be that healthy, there's nothing wrong with a donut every now and then.) A lot of people these days are just plain lazy. ♥

Wealth. Tube and screen time. Virtual sports. Obsession with the wheel rather than the sole as a means of getting around. Increase in eating out, especially junk food, due to families with to workers and no homekeeper, and cheap crappy high fat/salt/carbo food.

Portion size, agro-business involving itself in government dietary guidelines, cheap starchy and sugary foods, demonization of perfectly healthy food, the fast food industry, convience foods, failure to address what hormonal changes cause overweight to snowball into obesity, long work hours, over dependence on cars, the diet industry looking for profit sustainablity instead of lifestyle changes.

Probably just parents not teaching their kids how to eat healthy. it's not so much how much you eat, but more of what you eat and what fills you up faster. Technology plays a big role too, afterall I'm on a computer right now. But in all seriousness, kids should just get up off their couches and excersize more, and parents need to explain this.

We are a spoiled nation of people. We have it too good. Laziness, no discipline, the food being unhealthy and fattening, vigorous advertising and very poor eating habits are all valid reasons.

Fast Food is the #1 cause, and as they expand into other countries those people are gaining weight as well.
