I'm sorry to disagree with you, but there is a monastary here where I live and nuns live there. It is called The Monastery of the Infant Jesus. It is the home of cloistered nuns.

Convents are for active orders of nuns, the kind that teach and do social work. Monasteries are for monks and cloistered nuns, the type that discourage visitors.

Incidentally, an abbey is a type of convent but the superior is called an abbot or an abbess. A priory used to be a sub-abbey but that distinction was lost several hundred years ago.

Well we are used to hearing convents used for nuns and monasteries for monks, however, I think it may have more to do with the type of life that the monk or nun is living than on gender.

A monastery refers to those living a monastic life style i.e. ascetic things such as living in poverty, fasting, and spending all of their time in prayer. Perhaps convent refers to nuns who are living in a more service orientated community.
The fact that they are cloistered nuns surely shows that they are living a monastic lifestyle and thats probably why it is called a monastery.

In the case of nuns and sisters Monasteries of nuns are usually just that nuns and not sisters. Nuns take solemn vows including enclosure. They do not usually leave their monastery walls. Sisters do not take vows of enclosure and do leave their convent to work in the world.

I am male and have spent a total of seven nights in two different European Nun's Convents. It was an absolute pleasure.
