What exactly would you like it to do to protect the house? Dogs do not have any concept of a mortgage, or furniture, etc. So what should the dog protect?

Be realistic. A barking dog is a big deterrent for a burgler.

well not sure what type of dog you are talking about but i have a German Shepherd that when ever i hear a sound that is not familiar to me I ask her " WHO IS IT" even in a whisper. She will start barking and run to every door and window in the house and now if she hears a sound on her own she is there investigating, smelling under the door and sometimes growling or barking.
Start by asking your dog "who is it" when ever someone comes to the door. Let the dog announce someone is there. Then eventually when you ask them "who is it"they will automatically start barking to announce even if no one is there. Sorry i know you said instead of barking but this is all i know to help you. Works good though cuz she can scare off anybody with her bark! hope it helps!

you can get a dog professionally trained for protection. i knew a great dog, a rottweiler, that had no problem protecting his home. it was voice command trained to bite, attack to take down, or just intimidate an intruder. this dog had to be included into the insurance policy of the house it was so dangerous. a very kind dog if you were introduced properly as a guest to the house. it was an incredibly smart dog and a real asset to it's owner, an actor.
so you can go to the extreme and get a dog trained in this fashion. but do you really need to?
