When TEOTWAWKI happens what would be better handguns or a pistol caliber carbines? I have 2 7.62x25 CZ52 and P64 in 9x18 and would like to get a handgun or carbine in the other calibers such as 9mm, .40 and .45. I am trying to decide if it would be better to have a hand gun in each caliber or carbines. I have a Hi-point carbine in 9mm and love it. What do you all think handguns or carbines?

I should have said that I have a number of SKSs and AK clones along with other rifles. I would just like to have a firearm in each of the handgun caliber.

Carbines win over handguns. In the same caliber a carbine will be more accurate and provide greater range and control.

Dude, stick with a good, cheap, powerful caliber.
ONE. The 9mm sucks for knockdown power, but it's cheap.
Get a glock, and like was mentioned before, a kel tec that can use glock magazines. a Glock 17 is a staple pistol in any collection, even if TS doesnt HTF. You wanna protect yourself during anarchy should it ever happen? Ammo is the most important thing, and you have a good one in an SKS. Remember, K.I.S.S., having 38 different handguns is POINTLESS if you're 1 man and they're all a different caliber. A glock will ALWAYS fire, and you can reload the thing (why would a handgun be your main weapona anyway? it should be a good rifle or shotgun) if you have to. ALL my shotguns are the same guage, 20. That way all I need to get should I want them to lay some pain is 20 guage ammo, it's completely interchangeable. I would only get a 12 for collector usage. My revolvers are either .38 special or .357 magnum, so I can keep lots of .38 ammo on hand and still use the .357s.
you get the point rite?

All things considered, a shotgun is the better choice. But yours is a unique situation. A shotgun can be a little much for a new user, a woman or when it's used indoors. Especially if the user is not familiar. I think a carbine, if you are proficient in its use, is more effective than a shotgun which is alien to you. A shotgun is loud, has heavy recoil, and can be hard to hit with. Contrary to what people will tell you, at "across-the-room" distances, the pattern from a shotgun will only spread a couple of inches in the first 20-25 feet or so. They will not "spray" buckshot, even with a short barrel. A 9mm carbine, firing +P or +P+ can equal or exceed the ballistics of a .357 Magnum handgun with lighter bullets. If you're worried about over penetration, there are plenty of light-bullet, prefragmented loads available to minimize penetration.

As my grandpa used to say, you can only shoot one at a time, maybe two...

Handguns are great, they are concealable, so you can be armed but not scare everybody.

Pistol caliber carbines are easier to shoot accurately at longer distances than handguns and use the same caliber of ammo. But for the size, go with a rifle! Rifles have much more power, range, speed, flatter trajectory than a pistol caliber carbine. The AK-47, or AR-15 can be had in configurations that are the same size as a carbine. So they are a better choice.

My recommendation... One small back up pistol and one slightly larger pistol of the same caliber. Then one good fighting rifle. Chances are you will have to carry your own ammo and you don't want many different guns, requiring different ammo, magazines, and parts. Plus you may have to carry this gear on your back!

Why carry around a bunch of empty guns because you can't find ammo vs. carrying your gun with lots of ammo and magazines, because it's the only gun you have to worry about. And hey if you find one... shoot it for a while!

Carbine! My first Gun purchase was the week of the Riots in LA in 1992. Gun of choice? .30 Carbine. Easier to shoot that a handgun & the longer barrel improves performance. The increase in range helps too.( remember the movie, "For a few dollars more?") The long gun has more of a fear factor to bad guys in a SHTF LA or New Orleans senario. I would consider the .357 & .44mag lever actions or The Taurus pump in places were autos are not available. The Berretta Storm with interchangeable mags for their pistols would be a better choice than the Hi Point. Kel tec is a option as well.

A m1 carbine with softpoints will be my 1st choice always when the chips are down.

Oh, man, I can't believe I'm piping up on this one...

If ya got handguns, get a friggin rifle or a shotgun.
Get rid of that Hi-Point Carbine, and get a Kel-Tec. Then buy a Glock. If you get a Kel-tec Sub2000 chambered in 9mm Glock-meaning, build to handle Glock magazines- you can interchange your Glock 17 mags with the Sub2000. Glock 17 holds 17 rounds of 9x19 ammunition, plus you can find 33 round mags for them.
Nothing wrong with your Hi-point, but it's a low capacity, bulky, hard to store and hard to hide weapon.

Concerning your 9x18...if you ever get the chance, compare it side by side to a real makarov...i.e., a East German, Russian, Bulgarian, or Chinese. A genuine Makarov is like a work of art...I think you'll be impressed. The round is a little weak, though...if zombies attack, it won't even turn their heads.

Cz-52...great gun. Good choice.

Since you already have handguns for last ditch defense, I would go with a rifle caliber carbine. Think about a SKS, it is cheap and will go with your "eastern bloc" motif. But do consider a Mini-14 or a AR-15 if you can afford one. At the "end of times" your talking about, both 5.56 NATO and 7.62x39 mm ammo will be plentiful. Forget pistol caliber carbines and go with a real rifle!

All the guns in the world will do you little good if you aren't any good with them. find out what you are best with and go with that. Getting good with a little of each is the best idea though. Each has their strengths and weaknesses and what is best depends on the situation you're in. Consider not only the handiness of the weapon(s) you choose but also the carrying capacity of their magazines. 9mm is a poor stopper, i'd choose .40S&W or .45 ACP. Dont overlook the shotgun as a good defensive weapon either.
