I am a 22 year old college student going to my first opera with my girlfriend. She has never been before at all. We are going to see Carmen performed by the Virginia Opera. I was just wondering what the dress code would be? Any suggestions from anybody who has been?

It can vary from place to place. You could call the box office and ask what most people in your community wear to the opera.Or you could ask someone in the theater department at school who has been what they've seen people wear there.

Assuming it's an evening performance, a coat and tie for you, and a dressy outfit with long or short skirt, dress shoes, and sparkly earrings would probably do the trick for your date.

Regardless of what you end up wearing, it's going to be a fun experience for you all.

Tip: Take a small set of binoculars, and you'll be able to see more of the details onstage if your seats are not close up.

Don't listen to them. I have been attending the opera for several years now. I have season tickets to the Houston Grand Opera. You do NOT have to go in black tie or even a suit. While there certainly are some people that attend in formal wear, there is no dress code. I admit that I do sometimes wear a tux (opening night of the season), but most of the time I wear jeans, a polo, and a sport coat. I've even seen people wear jeans and a t-shirt. People go to the opera for the music and on-stage performance, not to look at what other people are wearing.

Just relax and enjoy the show!

For your girlfriend:Here is where that little black dress comes in handy, tasteful dress, not too sexy, not to low necked, or not too short.. If it is opening night, and you have orchestra seating, might consider a long dress. Otherwise, short is fine. Wear some nice jewelry, real stuff if you have it, and have your hair done, wear sensible heels, and carry a cute little evening bag.
For you, a black suit, white shirt, sober tie, dressy shiney black shoes. If again, you have very good seats on opening night, rent a tux. Otherwise, the tux is optional, especially since the bow tie for the tux is passe, now it is a long tie. Who can tell if it is a tux or a suit?
If money is a problem, do the best you can, the darker the suit, the better.
I love Carmen, have a good time. La la la lala, la la la la,

Dress code differs from country to country and city to city. Here in Durban, South Africa; some people come to the symphony with SHORTS and a CASUAL SHORT SLEEVE SHIRT. (Beach culture etc.)

Opera, generally demands a bit more formal dress. I think if you have a black suit and conservative tie (black shoes), you will fit in well.

Always go dressed formal. Everyone does. A simple tight
long dress, and a colorful shawl, always looks stunning. And
war you hair up, with tendrils here and there. I think one solid
color looks best. Or add a fancy scarf. Don't wear heels to high.
go with a more lower and comfortable heel. OSO LA MEEEOO!

The true opera attire is black tie (formal).
However, I think it has lightened up a little bit. As long as you go dressy, you are safe.

I'd really, really like to help but.... first: are you a male or a female? Cuz I don't think suggestions of long tight dresses and solemn hairdos are going to help if you are not a female... ?!

A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO ATTEND OPERA ARE THE QUINTESSENTIAL ELITE OF SOCIETY( WELL, THEY THINK THEY ARE...) ANYWAY, PUT ON THE DOG! BLACK TIE FORMAL, IF YOU GET MY DRIFT. DON'T BE SHY ON BLINGING IT UP, EITHER, AS YOU AND YOUR GUEST SHOULD CATCH EYES, AND MAKE EVERYONE ELSE THERE GREEN WITH ENVY. DO THIS AND YOUR SUCCESSFUL DATE IS ASSURED. ENJOY!

Wear a suit and get your hair cut. You want to look elegant for your your woman. You want to look cultured, and a man of fine taste.

Have fun! I'm jealous.
