I do sew well, so I could make it oval if I had to... Also what about a round tablecloth on an oval table? Thanks.

Yes it is perfectly ok to use a rectangle cloth on an oval table as long as the edges don't drag on the floor and it is even on all sides. I wouldn't use round because I think that might look strange but try it and if it looks good then go for it. Dressing a table is an art and if you can coordinate it to look balanced and appealing then it doesn't make any difference about shape. It's also fun to be unique around the holidays and I personally think it's so humdrum to conform to the standard cut out styles that are always in vogue. Be unique. If this is meant to be used as a buffet table then stack several old books at different levels to make the dishes stand out. Also lighting and florals have a great affect. But if this is for a formal dining like for guests at Thanksgiving then it can be something simple along with centerpieces and neat little name cards. Chair scarves are also very festive and can really make things elegant and warm. Good luck.

Round and oval won't work, but rectangle and oval might - if you get a bit inventive... when you drape the rectangle over the oval table, look at how far the corners hang down ... then tie them off with a bit of cord (same color as your place mats, wall color, plates, whatever - ) at about the same level as the overlap along the midpionts of the table sides. The cord sets for curtain tie backs are available thru discount outlets (a.k.a. Dollar Store) and will add a lush touch to your 'corners', roped, tasselled and all. Oval (or rather 'elliptical') tables are always hard to fit, and should you decide to do it right use heavy kraft paper (brown paper) to make a template of the actual top, then extend the edges a good ten inches to make your cutting template for fabric. I favor upholstery fabric for a tablecloth to cover good furniture - it is a) thick, dense, cushions dropped items so nicks in the tabletop are minimized b) wears like iron, useful if you have to wash out food or wine (sorry, Irish linen looks great, but is easily damaged...) c) comes in wider widths . The edge seams may need to be weighted if using heavy fabric - consider 3/8 chain may be required if you go to a full brocade upholstery fabric, about 48 oz/yd weight. Also consider using more than one cloth for dramatic effect - a base color, and a lighter cloth/sheer over top. looks great, and the light fabric is usually cheap at bargain fabric stores..

Maybe I'm just wierd, but I think a round table gets a round tablecloth, square gets square...they should match or it looks unbalanced.....but each to his own!!

If that's what you have and you don't want to mess with it then use it. If you are planning a black tie event then give sewing some serious consideration otherwise spend the extra time in the center piece and place settings.

I guess if it's a really big one and covers ok it would work. If it looks ok to you, that's all that matters!
