It seems like no matter what my bf eats (whether it is a snack or a meal), he gets so sleepy in about an hour or two. It doesn't matter what time of day or what type of food, he'll be fast asleep in moments. And it's getting so hard for him to study at night, because he gets hungry, and if he eats, he won't be able to study.

We would go to a doctor but he doesn't have medical insurance. Any input?

tell him to eat low to no sugar snacks/meals. I also used to get very sleepy when I ate food until I went to see a doctor who told me that I was allergic to sugar. I cut out all unnatural sugars and white flour, only eating dark chocolate, whole grains, and lots of fruits and water. He also needs to cut out any type of soda, and that includes diet sodas along with juices unless he squeezes it himself. Switch to water and flavored sparkling water, no additives to both. Within less than 2 weeks, he will have so much more energy that he will not only have more time for HW but also for you. ; )

my girlfriend has this problem and she kind of eats alot too haha. Im sure shed love me saying that, but she is on our college soccer team so she has to feed herself alot as its pretty rigorous. Between the eating and the soccer shes sleeping all the time. You can go to doctor if you want but chances are hes just a tired growing boy. If hes sleeping like 20 hours a day that might be one thing, but its probably nothing.
Can be odd though sometimes when your significant other sleeps double what you do.

Is it not a better plan to find out just Why Your boyfriend is having difficulty getting to sleep? What is He worrying about? How is His health? How is Your relationship going? How is Your sex life? Ask a few questions, then start to worry.

this sounds like a blood sugar problem. the only remedy i have found is a low-carb diet.
